In the villages beyond China’s megacities lives a fading tradition. A mere generation ago, Chinese grandmothers hand made shoes for their grandchildren.  They sat in doorways, in chairs beside rivers, in local markets and in the courtyards of the family home, hand stitching each piece of a tiny baby shoe…the sole, the base, the final button or snap. They are fewer in number and harder to find, but these women and their shoes still exist.
