I was sitting in bed this weekend, propped up on pillows and drinking my coffee. I was thinking about all of my goals and how to best use these next few months before we start the process of moving cross-country. I thought about how stressful it is to move, driving and staying in hotels and eating restaurant food for weeks on end.
I thought about how much eating out I've been doing recently, with the travel to find a house, with the kids' sports and activities and with work, which is sometimes just emotionally and mentally exhausting.
Then I thought: What if I ate, for one week, all healthy, homemade food?
It started a cascade of thoughts and what ifs. What if I actually meditated every day for a month? What if I stopped eating sugar for a week? What if I got to bed on time every night for seven straight days? What if I set aside a solid hour a day for reading? What if I set aside a solid hour for a workout? What if I ensured we sat down to a home cooked meal each night, regardless of schedules?
What would any of that look like?
I now feel inspired to choose a what if for each week and focus on one aspect of life for seven days. I'm curious to see the results. Seriously, what if I ate healthy, home cooked food for one week, just seven straight days? No eating out. No processed foods, eaten standing at the counter, one hurried bite after another?
To that end, I started my day not with a granola bar, in bed, surfing the web but with a bowl of oatmeal, topped with fresh berries, chopped walnuts, a splash of half-n-half and a drizzle of maple syrup. I sat at the table, with my husband, and we talked. It was lovely.
I wonder, after a week of eating well, how I'll feel. I wonder if I'll notice anything in particular (better sleep, less bloating) or if it won't make a measurable difference at all. How many times do we imagine a certain habit or lifestyle change will make a drastic difference but never really give it a try?
I mean....I do that a lot. :)
So, each week, I'm going to try a what if.
What would you try?
